2014: A Year In Review

2014: A Year In Review

By Jonas Lee
The Daily Yay
January 10, 2015

The inaugural year of football in the new Pony Conference took place this past fall, and the Twilight Sparkle Alicorns were head and shoulders and flanks above everypony else. The ALis, as they are know for short, floated like buttlerflies and stung like bees, finishing the second 13-0 with a Pony record of 5-0, the most points scored at 1051, and the least points conceded at 182. They wrapped up the year with a sweet BCS National Championship victory over Louisville.

The Spirit of Fluttershy College had a record of 11-2 and a 3-2 record in Pony play. Their aerial attack led them to a Las Vegas Bowl victory over USC: a 66-0 shutout. Applejack State's Appleknockers were rocking the pistol en route to the first of three 10-3 (2-3 Pony) records. As the Poinsettia Bowl representative from the Pony, they blew past an overmatched Western Kentucky side and gorged on some seafood before taking a long bus ride back to the Acres.

The Pinkie Pie Major Trouble were too hot for many teams to handle as they finished 10-3 (2-3 Pony), to go with an Independence Bowl victory over Virginia. It is not known whether or not Cheeri Lee will be returning as coach of the Major Trouble next season, as her contract with the team expires at the end of this year.

The Royals of the Rarity College of the Arts hit their stride and finished 10-3 (2-3 Pony). They were the other team in the conference besides Twilie to record over 1000 points (1015). The Royals wrapped up their season demolishing Southern Miss in the Armed Forces Bowl. Finally, the Rainbow Dash Rainbows finished at the bottom of the conference with a 9-4 record (1-4 Pony). However, despite a very disappointing year, the Rainbows ended their season with a New Mexico Bowl victory over Tulsa.

The second year of Pony Conference football is sure to be exciting. With the X on Twilight Sparkle's back getting bigger in 2015, will the competition be able to catch up?

New logos for TSU unveiled, team name changed to Alicorns

New logos for TSU unveiled, team name changed to Alicorns

September 11, 2014

The new primary and secondary logo for Twilight Sparkle University was officially unveiled on Wednesday night at a ceremony at Armor-Cadance Field, and with it, a new name change. The secondary logo featured one extra white star, and the new primary logo featured the founder as a princess of royal status. The team name will be called the Alicorns, or Alis.

"Alicorns are the most powerful beings in Equestria and live a very righteous life, leading the way to tomorrow," said university founder, Her Highness Princess Twilight Sparkle of Equestria at the rally. "To be an Alicorn means you are part of a group of scholars who desire success, achievement, academics and leadership. As Alis, we also pay homage to the greatest fighter of a generation, boxer Muhammad Ali. As students, it is your duty to seek to be great in what you do, to improve yourselves as young men and women of learning, and to lead by example, to teach young men and women the ways of the world.

"It gives me honor to anoint you as the men and women of the Twilight Sparkle Alicorns."

As the students roared in approval, chanting "Alis! Alis! Alis!", fireworks were in the air, and flags of the new logo were raised as the new university flag was raised for the first time. Shirts, buttons,, sweaters, and other merchandise featuring the new logos were on display. The secondary logo dotted the quad, and a new status of Twilight as an alicorn was unveiled.

"We float like a butterfly and sting like a bee!" said Jessica Barbosa, a sophomore physics major from Lodi, Calif. "I feel so good today. We're Alis! We're the Greatest!"

"What a wonderful feeling," said Sammy Ceus, a freshman anthropology major from Houston. "This was a good move by the administration. I like our shortened nickname. It's like we gained our wings or something. Great night to be an Ali. Get used to that, people."

"Everything is on us now to be on top, so we're going to do it!" said Jason Ross, a freshman on the baseball team. "This is gonna be our year! Yeah!"

"Wow," said Ed Maxwell, a sophomore French major from Chicago. "First we were the Unicorns, but now we are the Alicorns. Let's face it: in the end, you can't spell California without Ali. Now can you? Great move." As a result of the name change, enrollment has been increased to 50,000. The night also featured music from different bands, including Greece's Koza Mostra with their hit, "Al[i]cohol is Free."

Unicorns go "All In" in 156-34 victory over Wisconsin

Unicorns go "All In" in 156-34 victory over Wisconsin

The defending national champions picked up from where they left off. In his first game as coach of the Twilight Sparkle Unicorns, Shining Armor came up a with straight-to-the-point game plan: establish the passing game. The end result: a 156-34 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers at Armor-Cadence Field at Twilight Stadium.

"A very good outing by our team," Armor said to the press. "Being the head of the Royal Guard and a college football coach takes a lot of miles off you, but I'm used to heavy workloads and new opportunities.

"We got a lot of of [Unicorns QB] Tony [Hickman] today, but he had some difficulty throwing the ball. He threw four interceptions, and he needs to be smarter throwing the ball to our receivers because we have the toughest schedule in all of college football and the margin for error is pretty low.

"On the flip side, Tony's a pretty darn good scrambler and he can really damage run defenses with his mobility. He's our captain on offense for a reason, so the fans can expect big things from Tony this year."

The Unicorns improve to 1-0 and host Oregon on Sept. 6.

"We scheduled up against some of the best teams in college football to make our point felt that no one should take us lightly. We know what we are capable of doing and we understand that as the flagship school of the PonyCon, we need to represent all ponies and bronies well. The players have a lot of high expectations and that's always a good thing."
